Sociólogo alemán. A partir de 1881 fue docente en la Universidad de Kiel, principalmente. En su obra Comunidad y sociedad (1887) exploró las diferencias entre la noción orgánica de sociedad o Gemeinschaft ("comunidad como grupo social basado en normas tradicionales y un sentimiento compartido de solidaridad) y la noción de sociedad basada en el contrato social o Gesellschaft ("sociedad como grupo social que se mantiene cohesionado por el interés individual y racional). A su juicio, todas las sociedades presentan en la práctica elementos de ambos tipos de organización, porque la conducta humana no es ni totalmente instintiva ni completamente racional.
